Journaling prompt: What are your favorite summer-associated foods?

Yay more recipes!

I have the perfect recipe for a refreshing dinner in summer: Chinese Lemon Chicken via the Omnivore's Cookbook.

And I haven't been able to make her no-churn Black Sesame Ice Cream yet, but its very summer-y indeed, and the comments love it.

The day was bright, as though it was making an effort to be cheerful. When Sanne stepped out, she felt an unreasonable pressure to match its mood. She stepped in the centres of the cobblestones in the sidewalk, avoiding the edges and cracks, a spell she had been doing since she was a child. Sometimes it was a spell for calmness and focus. And sometimes it was a spell for avoiding fissures in time.

Now it was a spell for putting one foot in front of the other, because she hadn’t wanted to leave the house today. She'd wanted to stay in bed all day, which wasn’t good for magical hygiene, stagnating in your own energy.

There was a flower growing out of a crack in the sidewalk. Sanne paused and went around it because it seemed to rude to step over it. She rummaged in her bag, took out a vial, uncorked it, and brushed a tiny bit of pollen into it. She stoppered the vial and continued.

She’d embarked on this walk to make herself feel better, but she had a new destination now. She walked until the Materialry. The Keeper of Materials smiled at her as she came in, which made the walk worth it.

Crossovers.

Sometimes I wished fandom fucked with crossovers more like it used to. *

Maybe I'm not looking in the right places since I know it stills happens, it's just that I remember when fandom crossovers were a massive thing especially during my early days in fandom. Yeah, fanfic fusion AUs exist, but it's not the same. There would be fanworks of various kinds where alternate universes featuring different fictional worlds would visit each other, either already existed in or created a kind of wormhole or portal to go into each other's world. It didn't need to make sense, it just needed to be like "how would these characters from this story interact with these others from this other story?" and that's that. But I rarely see those kinds of fanworks anymore, at least not in the way that it used to thrive in fandom spaces. I only see aspects of it now among the cdrama fandom. Of course, this is mere speculation on my part, I kinda theorize that the rise and fall of SuperWhoLock sort of got people to shy away from doing crossovers in such a way, because it was viewed as "cringe" since it was everywhere and dominated a lot of the fandomsphere especially on Tumblr. Which would be a shame if that were true. There is something amazing and uniquely fannish about crossovers, whether it be fanfiction, fanart, fanvids, or classic image manips, it's always been interesting to see the kinds of creativity fandom can come up with. You might not always know the fandoms in question, but it's nice to see people having fun.

(* I'm including myself in this as well, since I had once created some crossover fanworks in the past but have also unfortunately fallen off that wagon and need to get back on.)

So turns out I'll be jobless mid-September, not August 😅 I did the math wrong. When they said three months notice I calculated it as June, July and August. But the three months are actually June to July, July to August, and August to September.

So I'll finish in mid-September (since I was given notice mid-June). I'll get half a month's pay, around $250, more than I would if I finished in August.

Speaking of August, my dad is going to leave his current job by the start of it. So we're both going to be liminal around the same time. He said his workplace is planning to do 'restructuring' and he'd rather quit than be laid off. He's financially stable and wants to take this chance to do something he's interested in (Haskell). I'm happy for us both. But when he told me this, that night I had a stress dream in which I was telling a nonexistent coworker that I'm losing this job while someone was trying to break the door down, and I was terrified seeing the door strain against the latch. When I woke from it, I hallucinated my brother standing in the dark doorway. He disappeared when I yelled "Hey!" at him, but I was so freaked out that I couldn't sleep for a while.

Since I'm losing my job I'm going to have to make self-publishing earn for me sooner, which has significantly changed my self-publishing plans.
How my self-publishing plans have changed )

I saw this YouTube short by Kris MF about how she was laid off from her corporate job the same week that she got her book deal, and how she's decided to take it as a sign. It comforted me. Maybe I can take this as a sign, too. I never would have opted to publish on KU unless I felt like I needed to and the only way that was going to happen was if I lost my job 🤷🏻‍♀️ I just need to give things spiritual significance to cope and fight off depression, so this is what we're going with ✨

I also got emotional over this threads post by Jordan Lynde:

It’s been a while since the last update, but these past few weeks have been chaotic. I almost broke my brain again, even though last time I promised it wouldn’t happen anymore. But that’s a topic for another post. The thing is, everything going on in my life during those days kept me away from the little things that help me stay at peace: what I do in my free time. It was awful, but I made some decisions, and now I’m back.

Currently making
  • Still working on my Yuri on Ice embroidery (very slowly, though).
  • The Heart Killers fanmeeting freebies.

Currently reading
  • SVSSS Vol. 4 - Chapter 26

Finished watching
  • Leap Day (Thai drama) – 12 episodes
  • My Stubborn (Thai BL drama) – 12 episodes
  • Boys in Love (Thai BL drama) – 12 episodes
  • Kpop Demon Hunters – movie
Currently watching

Dramas:
  • Winter Begonia (Chinese) – Weekly, weekends – 42/49 episodes
  • The Ex-Morning (Thai BL) – Weekly, Thursdays – 7/10 episodes
  • Break Up Service (Thai) – Weekly, Mondays – 10/12 episodes
  • The Promise of the Soul (Taiwanese BL) – No idea what day it’s airing, lol – 3/12
  • 10 Things I Want to Do Before I Turn 40 (Japanese BL) – Not sure if I’m gonna end up bingeing or if I’m going to watch it weekly - 1/12

Anime:
  • Komi Can’t Communicate – No schedule – 4/24
  • Sanrio Danshi – No schedule – 2/12
  • Rokuhōdō Yotsuiro Biyori – No schedule – 2/12
  • The Summer Hikaru Died – Weekly, Fridays – 1/?

On hold
  • The Bangkok Boy (Thai BL drama) – Weekly, Saturdays – 2/12 episodes
  • Perfect 10 Liners (Thai BL drama) – No schedule – 4/24 episodes

The only things I didn’t pause watching (even before quitting the side job) were the Sunday shows, The Ex-Morning, and Winter Begonia. I also binged Leap Day right before quitting because I was on the verge of collapse and needed a distraction to avoid disaster.

Since quitting, I’ve been trying new shows. Last night, I watched the first three episodes of The Promise of the Soul… it’s a bit weird, but the soul-transfer plot has me intrigued. There’s also a new Japanese one, 10 Things I Want to Do Before I Turn 40. For the first two minutes, it looked so similar to Old Fashioned Cupcake (my favorite) that I almost dropped it, but then some fun details caught my eye, and I decided to give it a chance.

At some point, Citrus Con happened, and I got a taste of Sanrio Danshi, which piqued my curiosity, so I started it. Then, somehow, I stumbled upon Rokuhōdō Yotsuiro Biyori and liked it enough to add it to my list. This weekend, The Summer Hikaru Died premiered, and it looks interesting. I remember seeing a manga recommendation for it on Blorbo last year (iirc), but I never got around to reading it. Now might be the time, since waiting for the next episode might be too much for my anxious brain. I’d love to go into more detail about my experience about the con too, but that might be better saved for another post. It wasn't my first time but I participated a bit more and it was so much fun, even though there were moments I felt very overwhelmed.

I’m not planning to binge all the anime on my list, I just like having options of things to watch when I’m not in the mood for live action, and these recent months anime has been good for my brain.

The only finished show on my list that I still need to wrap up is Break Up Service, but this week I’ve been working on freebies and can’t watch anything subtitled, so it’s been music instead. I could watch something in English or Spanish, but I don’t have the patience to look things up.

Now, about the shows I’ve finished:

Leap Day: I liked it, even though the story wasn’t the tightest. It had a lot of plot holes (like, a lot) but I enjoyed the weekly suspense. I stopped watching for a while because I was busy, anxious, and a mess, but when I was about to break, I needed something cathartic, and this kinda worked. What really stood out was the found-family trope and the finale. It was sad, but for me, it was the only possible resolution. I’d been thinking about it since around episode 6 or 7, but I didn’t expect them to actually go there. Overall, I enjoyed it, though I would’ve loved it more with tighter writing. Still, I wonder if I’m missing some cultural context or something.

Boys in Love: This was such a cute, comforting show. I loved the teenage shenanigans, how their conflicts were portrayed, and the sweetness of it all. The ending was hopeful… though, as a 38-year-old, I know not every relationship that starts at that age lasts forever. The teachers were a highlight, and I’d really like to watch a spin-off about them. Yes, I need more Papang in glasses, please. It was genuinely a show I looked forward to every Sunday, and I’m gonna miss it.

My Stubborn: Oh boy. This one was a ride. It was way more fun than I expected when I started. The high heat was great, but at some point, I got really invested in Sorn and needed to know what was going on in his head. By the end, we got a glimpse of why he acted the way he did, and even though he stayed a walking red flag, at least he figured his shit out enough to resolve his main issue and told Jun about his real feelings. And they gave us spice in the last episode too, so I’m happy. I’m gonna miss this messy show; it made Sundays something to look forward to. So much fun.

Lastly, earlier today I watched Kpop Demon Hunters in a watch party, and it was so much fun. I liked it, but I kinda want to rewatch it because I think there’s a lot going on. The songs were bangers, and now I can’t get “Soda Pop” out of my head now (not that I’m trying really hard lol).

Anyway, I'm still in a weird headspace, but I'm starting to feel like myself again, so that's good. I also need to finish reading SVSSS, but reading always gets harder after my brain goes through that kind of thing... so I'm taking it slow.

Lui by CM Deiana (who used to write for the Yaoi France fanzine) was a lot of fun! During the Covid lockdown, Alexandre, a sociology student, meets Samuel, a delivery man.

I bought this novel through crowdfunding, so I got:
- 3 bonus chapters about various secondary characters
- 1 fanfic written by Auriane Velten (Ainsi soient-illes) and printed like a fanzine: it's an AU where Alex and Sam meet 25 years later, in a fascist France (we're sadly heading there, but I sure hope that it's not going to last that long)
- a few goodies

I love that the book is a little mixed-media, with illustrations of notebook pages between chapters.

There's major m/m, with Alex being demisexual and on the autism spectrum. The secondary characters mostly include gay men, but also two sapphics and an enby. There are a few POC, and Covid-related anti-Asian racism is tackled.

Tunnel of Love
Journaling: The romance of summer! What do you love? Write about anything you feel sentimental about or that gets your heart pumping.

I love cooking❤
I love to cook, and I love to eat, and I love to have my food prepared exactly as I like it.
Cooking for others is how I show my love for them. I love the sense of community it gives me to share a home-cooked meal.
I love being someone people go to for recipes or cooking advice, and I love to hand these out. So, here you go, have The Woks of Life’s Tom Kha Gai recipe.
When I make this Tom Kha, I leave out the chili, and add just a bit more coconut milk.

The Old Guard 2 was awesome, but Netflix'd better greenlight a third movie right freaking now. I'm reading the comics, but that doesn't help with the cliffhanger because the plot of the movies is different.

The first film was already full of hot people, and they went and added Henry Golding and Uma Thurman to the cast. ^^

There's major m/m, as well as subtext f/f (canon f/f in the comics).

Happy 4th of July.

Journaling Prompt: Light up your journal with activity this month. Talk about your goals for July or for the second half of 2025.

My goals this summer are

1) Participate in the sunshine challenge :D

2) Survive the pressure changes due to the summer weather. It wreaks havoc on my damaged ear unfortunately.

3) Crochet a dress for the first time. I won't be able to wear it until next year, but that's okay. I've been eyeing the Better World Dress pattern.

Y'all! I can't BELIEVE this ship has only 10 fics on AO3. I mean look at this!!! The fics should be writing themselves by now!!!!!

The rolled up sleeves?! The loosened ties?!?! The PULLING of said loosened ties?!?!?! The waist grabs?!?!?!?! The hands on waists, period?!?!?! The FLIRTINGGGGGG?!?!?!?!

They literally walked towards each other, holding eye contact, while singing to each other that they're in love?!?! It's canon now!!!!!

I have watched every fancam ever of Yonghee and Hyunsuk performing this. For research purposes. The research being finding the perfect one. There isn't, but this one's a splice of several fancams and edited well (what keeps it from being perfect is that the OP is clearly Hyunsuk biased, and I'm Yonghee biased by Vindrae at Kingdom of Knuffel):

So, I must mandatorily sign off with a Yonghee fancam:

No but seriously, the fact that there are no canon compliant fics about this performance and all its implications? IS A FACT I CANNOT ACCEPT. I will fill this ship tag all by myself if I have to but like LOOK at the glory of this! It's a miracle, and my soul is so well fed, I must now spread the word. Hear ye. Kim Yonghee/Yoon Hyunsuk. Amen. //mic drop
